Growth of Sr6Rh5O15 Single Crystals from High-Temperature Solutions:  Structure Determination Using the Traditional 3-D and the 4-D Superspace Group Methods and Magnetic Measurements on Oriented Single Crystals

Abstract: Single crystals of Sr6Rh5O15 were grown from a molten potassium carbonate flux. The structure was solved by both the traditional 3-D crystallographic approach and the 4-D superspace group approach using JANA2000. Both methods produced an equivalent structure determination, thereby confirming the 4-D superspace group approach as an effective structure solution method for 3-D commensurate composite structures. Sr6Rh5O15 corresponds to the n = 1, m = 1 member of the A3n+3mA'nB3m+nO9m+6n family of 2H hexagonal per… Show more

“…At 12 K, when the direction of the magnetic field parallel to the c-axis, in the low-field region, the magnetization shows a nearly linear increase with increasing magnetic field, and then a spin-flip transition is observed at a magnetic field around 7 T. However, in the case of the magnetic-field direction perpendicular to the c-axis, the magnetization increases almost linearly. The observed large anisotropy is similar to the results of susceptibility measurement of Sr 6 Co 5 O 14.7 [19] and Sr 6 Rh 5 O 15 [28].…”

“…1(b)] [13]. Ni 2+ is surrounded by a trigonal bipyramid of oxygen atoms, while the Ir 4+ ion sits in a distorted octahedral oxygen cage [11,13,18]. Magnetic frustration is intrinsic to such a structure, and can result from antiferromagnetic interactions within the triangular lattice in the ab plane, and from frustration between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions along the c-axis chains [11,14,[19][20][21].…”

“…In the latter compound, the magnetic wave function is referred to as a J eff = 1 2 state, where J eff is an effective total angular momentum. However, as already noted, compared to Sr 2 IrO 4 , which has an octahedral oxygen cage around the Ir 4+ ion [1,27], the oxygen cages in Sr 3 NiIrO 6 and Sr 3 CoIrO 6 are trigonally distorted [11,13,18]. Recently, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements were combined with electronicstructure calculations incorporating noncubic crystal-field effects and spin-orbit coupling [10]; these calculations [see schematic in Fig.…”
