“…In other reports, the prevalence was 0% (0/1000), 0.42% (6/1435), and 0.94% (3/318) in Irish, Swiss, and Thai populations, respectively . In the Irish population, screening was performed with serum of the mother of the child affected by HDFN presented in the case report of Field et al The sources mentioning the prevalence in Swiss and Thai populations did not make mention of the origin of the anti‐Mt a used. To our knowledge, the prevalence of the Mt a antigen has not been studied in populations other than the aforementioned.…”

“…Two of these cases were severe, requiring RBC transfusion. Apart from these cases, there is only one other published description of HDFN caused by anti‐Mt a . The affected newborn in that case was born to a woman who had already given birth to another Mt(a+) child.…”

“…However, anti–Mt a has demonstrated clinical significance since it has caused severe HDN [5]. It is reasonable to expect that anti–Vr could cause HDN since Vr is well developed on cord cells.…”

“…The Mt a antigen occurs with an incidence ranging from 0.099% in African–Amercians to 0.943% in the Tai population [4]. The antigen is fully developed on cord RBCs and has caused severe hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) in 1 infant who required exchange transfusions [5]. To date, the Mt a antigen has not been found on M+N– RBCs and the presence of the Mt a antigen does not affect the expression of N or s antigens.…”
