“…These ‘classic’ Zechstein cycles can be further subdivided hierarchically (Tucker, 1991; Strohmenger et al. , 1996a,b; Wagner & Peryt, 1997; Leyrer et al. , 1999).…”

“…The whole Zechstein interval represents a second‐order cycle (Tucker, 1991; Strohmenger et al. , 1996a; Leyrer et al. , 1999) with duration of about 7 Myr (Menning & German Stratigraphic Commission, 2002).…”

“…These fundamental elements are characterized by reef-builder species or sediments which posses specific fabrics or textures. Focus at such a fine scale offers an alternative to all carbonate forward models which work at the basin, platform or ramp scale (Aurell et al, 1998;Leyrer et al, 1999;Warrlich et al, 2002;Burgess & Wright, 2003), and to those who use geostatistical rules to work on the individual rock types (Doligez et al, 1999). This fine decimetre-scale may also offer further analytical perspectives: for instance, petrophysical properties such as porosity and permeability could be attributed to each facies in order to simulate, in close detail and in three dimensions, the interaction of fluids with carbonate rocks involved in diagenetic processes (Whitaker et al, 1999) such as early cementation, which is a fundamental process in the deposition of the Devonian reefs in the Canning Basin.…”

“…Such salina cycles are known from numerous epochs in the geological past, e.g., the Permian Zechstein Basin, where several cycles exist. Although varying in thickness and in completeness, they may be used for basinwide (sequential) stratigraphic correlation (Leyer et al, 1999). The thickness of gypsum seams, the supratidal increments, increases vertically upward in the lithofacies V and centimeterthick LLH stromatolites tend to evolve into giant SH stromatolites in the Middle Al Nakhsh Member.…”
