Homeostatic photobiomodulation

Abstract: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a modulation of laser irradiation or monochromatic light (LI) on biosystems, which stimulates or inhibits biological functions but does not result in irreducible damage. LI might be of low intensity LI (LIL) (about 10 mW/cm 2 ), or moderate intensity LI (MIL) (10 2 -10 3 mW/cm 2 ). PBM of LIL or MIL (LPBM or MPBM) is studied from the homeostatic viewpoint in this paper. Homeostasis is redefined as the function-specific homeostasis (FSH), a negative-feedback response of a biosystem w… Show more

“…10 However, the internal constancy cannot exactly be deeply studied, therefore homeostasis has been extended to function-speci¯c homeostasis (FSH) in our laboratory. 6,11,12 An FSH is a negative-feedback response of a biosystem to maintain the functionspeci¯c conditions inside the biosystem so that the function is perfectly performed. A function far from its FSH is called a dysfunctional function, which corresponds to de¯cient yang or yin in TCM.…”

“…If a biosystem is in homeostasis, it normally functions so that it is healthy. LPBM is a homeostatic regulation [15] so that there is no PBM on homeostasis, but MPBM, IHPBM and PPBM might not be a homeostatic regulation, which depends on ROS level and cell sensitivity.…”

“…LPBM is a homeostatic regulation [15]. C2C12 myoblasts in 10% FCS is in homeostasis so that simvastatin at 2.0X 10 6 2.010X7 and 2.0X 10 8mol/L had no effects on the myoblast proliferation, and no PBM has been found.…”

“…The quality of a FSH, functional fitness 6 , includes function complexity and function stability 1,3 . The higher the functional fitness of a normal function, the higher the resistance of the normal function to disturbances.…”

“…A FSH-specific stress (FSS) disrupting the FSH is a function of a biosystem and there is a FSS-specific homeostasis (FSSH) 3 . After the existing FSH is disrupted, there many possible kinds of would-be FSH (wFSH) would be established.…”
