Cellular pathways are ordinarily diagnosed with pathway inhibitors, related gene regulation, or°u orescent protein markers. They are also suggested to be diagnosed with pathway activation modulation of photobiomodulation (PBM) in this paper. A PBM on a biosystem function depends on whether the biosystem is in its function-speci¯c homeostasis (FSH). An FSH, a negative feedback response for the function to be performed perfectly, is maintained by its FSH-essential subfunctions and its FSH-non-essential subfunctions (FNSs). A function in its FSH or far from its FSH is called a normal or dysfunctional function. A direct PBM may self-adaptatively modulate a dysfunctional function until it is normal so that it can be used to discover the optimum pathways for an FSH to be established. An indirect PBM may self-adaptatively modulate a dysfunctional FNS of a normal function until the FNS is normal, and the normal function is then upgraded so that it can be used to discover the redundant pathways for a normal function to be upgraded.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a modulation of monochromatic light or laser irradiation (LI) on biosystems, which stimulates or inhibits biological functions but does not result in irreducible damage. As photonic approaches suggested to enhance muscle restoration, the PBM of low intensity LI (LIL), _10 mW/cm2, moderate intensity LI (MIL), 102 3 mW/cm2, and photodynamic effect (PDE) on muscle regeneration have been reviewed in vitro and in vivo from the viewpoints of homeostatic regulation, respectively.

Indirect photobiomodulation in functional networks

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-damaged modulation of laser irradiation or monochromatic light (LI) on a biosystem function. It depends on whether the function is in its function-specific homeostasis (FSH), a negative feedback response for the function to be performed perfectly. Many redundant pathways (RPs) maintain the same cellular function. The full activation of any of RPs can maintain a normal function in its FSH, but partial activation of all the RPs can only maintain a dysfunctional function far from its FSH. A PBM may self-adaptively modulate the activation of a partially activated RP of a normal function until it is fully activated and the normal function is then upgraded. This PBM is called indirect PBM (iPBM). The iPBM on cells such as tumor cells, myoblast cells and fibroblasts and other biosystems and their applications would be reviewed in this paper.
