“…We note that the functional effects of gas trapping due to airway obstruction and emphysema will both result in low or no change in proton signal with volume and low to no 3 He ventilation. 3 He MR imaging has been successful at demonstrating high-resolution ventilation imaging in obstructive pulmonary diseases (39,40), but high costs and the non-Food and Drug Administration-approved gas tracers have restricted its translation to the clinic. On the contrary, we propose a method based on straightforward pulse sequences and hardware that simply measures the regional amplitude of proton signal change between different lung volumes with no requirement for any gaseous tracers.…”
