Hypolipidemic Effect of Polyvinylpyrrolidone in Man

Abstract: Intravenous infusion of 500 ml of 6% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, average molecular weight 40,000) in isotonic saline solution daily for 2 days induced prompt and significant reductions in serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in eight hyperlipidemic patients. Mean maximal decrements in serum cholesterol and triglyceride were 29% and 28% below control values, respectively, occurring 5 days after infusion of PVP. Mean values for hematocrit and total serum protein concentration were slightly decreased … Show more

“…Another contributing factor could be the ability of pyrrolidone derivatives to solubilize lipids. 30,31 Senofilcon A and galyfilcon A both contain PVP in the reaction mixture, whereas the lotrafilcon polymers do not.…”

“…37 When the surface is not continuous or biocompatible enough to retard lipid adsorption the chemistry of the bulk may also play a role as NVP (N-vinyl pyrrolidone), which balafilcon A contains (Table 1), has been shown to have a significant affinity to lipid. 30 Also galyfilcon A and senofilcon A contain a pyrrolidone derivative as an internal wetting agent (PVP; polyvinyl pyrrolidone) that may cause increased lipid solubility, 31 thus providing them with a greater propensity for lipid sequestering.…”

“…The lenses containing NVP (comfilcon A) and PVP (senofilcon C) showed a strong attraction of cholesteryl ester into the lens matrix, which may suggest that NVP within a lens can enhance lipid incorporation, by increasing lipid solubility within the matrix. 37 Samfilcon A also incorporates PVP monomers; however, a more gradual increase in lipid accumulation towards the lens centre was seen in this lens type, suggesting that either the PVP distributed within the lens material is different from that seen in senofilcon A or the concentration relative to the other material components differs between the two materials. Lotrafilcon B, which has a plasma surface treatment, deterred cholesteryl ester deposition to the bulk of the lens for the first 14 days and mainly deposited on the surfaces.…”
