Abstract:The increased representation of minority students on the campuses of predominantly White universities in the United States presents increased opportunities for intercultural contact. Studying dating experiences across racial and ethnic lines has been used to determine the existence of a post-racial America. While most previous research has examined general racial/ethnic and gender differences in intercultural college dating experiences, this study analyzes precollege and college-going friendship diversity and skin tone as factors accounting for romantic distance between racial/ethnic groups among a recent cohort of college students. Hierarchical linear modeling analyses were conducted on a 4-year longitudinal sample of 2804 undergraduate students from 24 colleges and universities. Results confirm that White students continue to be the group most likely to engage in intragroup dating relationships, Latino/a students were the most likely to date interculturally, and that Black men were significantly more likely to date interculturally than Black women. For Black students there were significant within group differences in intercultural dating based on skin tone.

“…Secara spesifik, Herman dan Campbell (2012) menyebutkan bahwa wanita kulit putih dimungkinkan untuk menyetujui hubungan antar-ras pada orang lain, tetapi tidak jika itu terjadi pada dirinya, sedangkan pria kulit putih memiliki keinginan yang lebih tinggi untuk menjalani hubungan antar-ras secara personal, khususnya dengan orang Asia. Akan tetapi, jika dilihat secara keseluruhan, baik pria maupun wanita kulit putih menyatakan sangat tidak mungkin untuk menjalani hubungan berbeda ras, atau dengan kata lain, sikap positif yang ditunjukkan terhadap hubungan antar-ras tidak dapat diartikan sebagai kecenderungan yang tinggi pada realisasi hubungan perkawinan yang sesungguhnya (Herman & Campbell, 2012). Okamoto (2007) mengungkapkan bahwa perkawinan antarbudaya antara orang Asia dan orang kulit putih Amerika dapat berlanjut sebagai bentuk integrasi dua budaya selama kedua belah pihak tetap tidak disetarakan dalam hal pekerjaan, namun situasi sosial lainnya (seperti halnya dalam relasi pertemanan) berusaha memelihara dan mengembangkan interaksi antara kedua budaya tersebut dengan mendobrak batas-batas diskriminasi rasial.…”

Intercultural marriages have an actual percentage increase in different countries over time.One of the things that should be observed in intercultural marriage is that in married couples in the same culture, we will discover the uniqueness of individual personality traits that become one of the determinants for individuals in adapting to marital relationships, whereas in intercultural marriage relationships, there are many differences in cultural values brought by both individuals from birth and on the one hand it is possible to contradict so that it can complicate the process of adaptation in marriage and increase the likelihood of conflict during the marriage from time to time. From literature review, the emergence of conflict due to cultural differences can lead to marital disatisfaction that can lead to the intention and decision to divorce. In view of the growing intercultural marriage trends in many countries over time, this paper will specifically review the potential for conflict due to cultural differences in intercultural marriages, and will also address individual aspects of cultural differences as a triggering factor conflicts in intercultural marriages, and conflict management models that will be determinants of intercultural marriage achievement to provide a discourse on how to manage conflicts appropriately so that intercultural partners can sustain their marriage well into the elderly. In general, the use of integrating and compromising models in managing conflict will maintain a harmonious relationship that supports the achievement of marital satisfaction in intercultural couples.

Mutamenti sociali, mobilità transnazionale e valorizzazione del benessere dell'individuo hanno caratterizzato la società moderna e contribuito alla formazione delle coppie miste; un fenomeno che coinvolge individui che provengono da paesi a forte pressione migratoria, come l'Arcipelago delle Filippine, la Romania, la Polonia o l'Albania da cui giungono prevalentemente le donne, mentre l'Africa è, in genere, il paese di origine degli uomini che sposano un'italiana (senegalesi, tunisini, marocchini) (Carrà, 2011). L'analisi delle caratteristiche della coppia mista consente di esplorare la praticabilità dell'integrazione di differenti esperienze culturali sul piano dei rapporti di coppia, familiari e sociali (Scabini, Regalia e Giuliani, 2007), esprimendo il livello più profondo d'incontro tra culture e identità differenti che sembra ormai costituire la base della società moderna e che necessita approfondimento, studio e attenzione scientifica crescenti.
