“…We treated this as a measure of "prior intergroup musical contact." The remaining musical items were averaged to assess the respondents' overall interest in music listening; this was included as a control measure in all analyses, thus allowing our analysis to differentiate between music seeking behavior that is driven by general musical interest versus intergroup concerns (Sanatkar et al, 2018).…”

“…The focus on acknowledging and promoting new mixed and plural forms of identity can also be beneficial because identity complexity and flexibility are associated with reduced prejudice and increased social acceptance (e.g., Miller et al, 2009;Roccas & Brewer, 2002;Sanatkar et al, 2018;Schmid et al, 2009;Verkuyten & Martinovic, 2012). Indeed, psychological research reveals that low social identity complexity is associated with prejudice toward outgroups by increasing "us-them" boundaries in the absence of cross-cutting categories (e.g., Crisp & Hewstone, 2006).…”

“…A deprovincial view implies a widening of one’s horizon by acknowledging and recognizing the value of other cultures, and thereby putting one’s own taken‐for‐granted cultural standards into perspective. Although deprovincialization does not have to imply emotional distancing from the in‐group, some studies have provided “at best a crude test” (Pettigrew, 2009, p. 59) of the deprovincialization process by inferring its presence from (reverse‐scored) in‐group identification or higher social identity complexity (Brewer, 2008; Sanatkar, Paolini, Damigella, & Licciardello, 2018; Schmid, Hewstone, & Tausch, 2014). Yet, low in‐group identification and high identity complexity can have different reasons and meanings, and do not necessarily imply a widening of social perceptions and in‐group reappraisal.…”
