In Vitro Antimutagenicity of Allium Tuncelianum Ethanol Extract Against Induction of Chromosome Aberration by Mutagenic Agent Mitomycine C

Abstract: SummaryAllium Tuncelianum is a garlic species which is locally produced in Tunceli, Turkey. Garlic contains several biologically active compounds known as organosulfur compounds which are reported to have anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic effects. Present study examined the in vitro antigenotoxic activity of ethanolic extracts of A. Tuncelianum in human lymphocyte cells by chromosome aberration test. Samples of A. Tuncelianum were extracted by ethanol using soxhlet extractor. The extract was tested on human l… Show more

“…The juice from Allium macrostemon bulbs significantly reduced oxidative damage in T-lymphocytes of rats [51]. Özkan et al (2013) [52] showed that organosulfur rich ethanol extract of Allium tuncelianum significantly reduced the chromosomal aberration rate in human lymphocyte cells when compared with the culture treated with a mutagenic compound, mitomycin C (MMC). Millet et al (2012) [53] showed that fermented aqueous extract (FAE) of A. cepa can significantly inhibit HepG2 cancer cell Plants 2020, 9, 98 6 of 16 growth.…”

“…The mechanism of action could be related to nonspecific pathways including calcium ions and calcium channel mediated pathways. The present study revealed the contractile responses of E. kotschyi on detrusor and ileal tissues which should be further investigated by in vivo studies for its promising pharmacological effects on motility along with complementary toxicity tests and more research studies should be encouraged on the pharmacological activity of the endemic plants in Turkey [26] to reveal a basis for their ethnomedicinal use.…”

“…Allium species are well-known to produce many volatile organosulfur compounds, which contribute to the unique smell and taste of these plant species [38,44]. These compounds exhibit broad-spectrum biological activities towards microorganisms, plants and animals [44,45]. Although this study showed that aqueous leachates displayed much higher anti-FOC activity, the active compounds in the aqueous leachates were volatiles and low polarity [34,46], which is consistent with the result that the aqueous leachates had significantly more active compounds than volatiles (Fig.…”
