A feeding trial was conducted with juvenile rainbow trout (15-16 g initial weight) to assess the effects of including single-cell protein (SCP) produced from Methylobacterium extorquens in trout feeds. Three isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were produced: a control diet and two experimental diets containing 5% or 10% bacterial protein meal replacing soybean meal. Triplicate tanks, each containing 35 fish, were fed each diet to apparent satiation in a constant-temperature (15°C), flow-through tank system for 12 weeks. No statistically significant differences in final fish weight or other fish growth parameters were observed. Similarly, feed efficiency parameters showed no significant differences among groups. Nutrient retention indices (protein, fat, energy) were relatively high and similar among fish in each dietary treatment group, as were whole body proximate compositions. Fish survival was high, with a small but statistically significant increase for the 10% SCP diet. Overall, results demonstrate that SCP from M. extorquens is a safe and effective alternative protein for rainbow trout diets at the low inclusion levels tested. Slightly lower weight gain in fish fed the 10% SCP diet was largely due to lower feed intake, suggesting that adding palatability-enhancing ingredients to feeds may allow higher levels of M. extorquens SCP to be used without compromising fish growth. Effects of growth substrate and nucleic acid reduction in the production of bacterial protein meal (BPM) were studied using a bacteria culture containing mainly Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath). BPM were produced on natural gas (>90% methane) (BPMG), methanol (BPMM), or methanol followed by nucleic acid reduction (BPMM-NAR). BPMG and BPMM had similar crude protein (CP) and amino acid contents, whereas BPMM-NAR had slightly higher CP and amino acid contents. Digestibility of CP and amino acids in mink was higher for BPMM than for BPMG. Tryptophan revealed the greatest difference in true digestibility (70.5% for BPMG vs 89.5% for BPMM) and lysine the least difference (93.2% for BPMG and 95.7% for BPMM). There were no differences in CP or amino acid digestibility between BPMM and BPMM-NAR. It was concluded that BPM grown on methanol gave higher digestibility of CP and amino acids than natural gas, probably due to lower proportion of bacterial intracellular membrane protein.

RESUMO -Este experimento foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da inclusão de farinha de resíduos da industrialização de tilápia (FT) na alimentação de alevinos de piauçu (Leporinus macrocephalus). Cento e vinte e cinco alevinos com peso e comprimento iniciais de 0,19 ± 0,004 g e 2,37 ± 0,2 cm foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e cinco repetições. As rações testadas continham 0; 5; 10 e 15% de FT e 0% de FT suplementada com metionina. O arraçoamento foi de 10% da biomassa quatro vezes ao dia (8, 11, 14 e 17 h). As médias dos parâmetros físico-químicos da água foram 7,89 ± 0,05, 89,93 ± 0,42, 7,15 ± 0,10 e 27,10 ± 0,95 para pH, condutividade elétrica (μS.cm -1 ), oxigênio dissolvido (mg.L -1 ) e temperatura (ºC), respectivamente. Ao final do período experimental, foram avaliadas as médias de sobrevivência (SO), peso final (PF), comprimento final (CF), ganho de peso (GP), fator de condição (FC) e conversão alimentar aparente (CA). Foram observadas diferenças quanto ao CF, CA e FC entre tratamentos, obtendo-se melhores resultados naqueles com inclusão de FT e suplementação de metionina. O CF apresentou aumento linear com platô em 8,56% de FT e a CA apresentou redução linear com platô de 8,19% de inclusão de FT. Os maiores teores de proteína bruta (PB) na carcaça foram obtidos nos tratamentos com mais de 5% de FT e 0% de FT suplementado com metionina. At the end of the experiment, the means of survival (SO), final weight (FW), final length (FL), weight gain (WG), condiction factor (CF), and apparent feeding conversion (FC) were measured and calculated. Significant effects of treatments on CF, CA, and FC were detected. The better results were observed with the increasing levels of FT and supplementation of methionine.
