Influence of Photoinitiator System on Physical-Chemical Properties of Experimental Self-Adhesive Composites

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of photoinitiator systems on physical-chemical properties of flowable composites. Conventional (CFC), composed by bisphenol-glycidyl dimethacrylate (BisGMA)+triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), and self-adhesive (SAFC), composed by BisGMA+TEDGMA+bis[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] phosphate (2MP), flowable composites were developed. Five photoinitiator systems were tested: camphorquinone (CQ), ethyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDMAB), diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylb… Show more

“…A higher concentration of the photoinitiators results in a greater color change of the material [44]. Residual yellow discoloration after UV polymerization is greater in RBCs containing BAPO than in those containing TPO [45]. As the polymerization rate of 3D printable materials is slow, their color stability may be influenced by these photoinitiators.…”

“…The properties of adhesive systems are extremely important for the reliability and longevity of adhesive procedures. The chemical and physical properties of resin materials are directly related to their composition [45], since the monomer type may have some influence on the conversion and on the type of polymer that is formed, which may increase or decrease cross-link density [6].…”

“…EDMAB (ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate), a tertiary amine which functions as a co-initiator of the polymerization reaction, is generally associated with camphorquinone to achieve a high degree of conversion. The unreacted camphorquinone during the polymerization process has a strong yellow coloration, which makes the resins that have it yellower than the others [30]. In this study, the coordinate b*, referring to the yellow color, presented significant bleaching for all composite resins evaluated, regardless of the presence of EDMAB in its composition.…”
