Interaction of polydiallyldimethylammonium salts with iodine

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The interaction between polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and KI or KBr, followed by changes in conformation of macromolecules, coil compaction, and counterion exchange, was detected by means of turbidimetry and viscometry. In aqueous solutions at presence of KI, PDADMAC rapidly binds iodine by the formation of polymer-iodine complexes PDADMA I Ϫ I m (m Յ 4). Spectrophotometric investigations of the interaction in water without KI prove the formation of complexes of polyquaternary ammoniu… Show more

“…In the latter material, iodine is incorporated into the polyionic complex through interaction with the N ‐(2‐hydroxyl)propyl‐3‐trimethyl ammonium groups. When DS > 0.32, the QS–iodine dispersions absorb light in the blue‐green region of the spectrum (Figure 3), and the colour of dispersion becomes yellow‐brown, which is typical of the ionic complex,19 e.g., the QS + DS=0.61 I −. (I 2 ) m dispersion [Figure 2(d)].…”

“…17 Meanwhile, water-insoluble, stable complexes composed from strong-base exchange resins in salt form, or water-soluble polydialyldimethylammonium chloride and triiodides or pentaiodides are used for water disinfection and inhibit the growth and replication of pathogenic bacteria, spores, and viruses. 1,18,19 Biodegradable natural polymers and their derivatives, especially cationic polysaccharides, are promising materials for the production of polymeric iodophores. Ionic complexes between positively charged chitosan macromolecules and anionic triiodide in a hydrogel form are suitable for direct application to intact skin.…”

“…Anion exchangers with strong basic properties adsorbed polyiodides (containing up to 4.75 molecules of iodine) directly from water solutions, and the rate of interaction between such substances was high [9]. In aqueous solution, in the presence of KI, quaternary ammonium groups of polydialyldimethylammonium salts rapidly attached iodine during the formation of polymer-iodine complexes [10]. Insoluble iodinesaturated materials with primary, secondary, tertiary amino or quaternary ammonium groups are also suggested as bactericides for water treatment [11].…”

“…Anionic species of iodine could interact with cationic groups of various polymers and form polymeric iodophores as ionic complexes [9][10][11]. Anion exchangers with strong basic properties adsorbed polyiodides (containing up to 4.75 molecules of iodine) directly from water solutions, and the rate of interaction between such substances was high [9].…”
