Interaction with mycorrhiza helper bacterium Streptomyces sp. AcH 505 modifies organisation of actin cytoskeleton in the ectomycorrhizal fungus Amanita muscaria (fly agaric)

Abstract: The actin cytoskeleton (AC) of fungal hyphae is a major determinant of hyphal shape and morphogenesis, implicated in controlling tip structure and secretory vesicle delivery. Hyphal growth of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Amanita muscaria and symbiosis formation with spruce are promoted by the mycorrhiza helper bacterium Streptomyces sp. AcH 505 (AcH 505). To investigate structural requirements of growth promotion, the effect of AcH 505 on A. muscaria hyphal morphology, AC and actin gene expression were studied. … Show more

“…Nevertheless, we observed a decrease of fungal biomass. The sharply reduced biomass/colony area ratio was caused both by a reduction in mycelial density and thinning of hyphae (Maier 2003;Schrey et al 2007). The structural background of hyphal thinning was due to a specific modification in A. muscaria actin cytoskeleton.…”

“…The mycorrhizal helper strain Streptomyces sp. AcH505 was shown to have a pronounced effect on the organization of the cytoskeleton of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Amanita muscaria (351). The same strain also produces auxofuran, a metabolite that contributes to its growth-promoting effect, the synthesis of which is promoted in bacterial-fungal cocultures and at acidic pH values that typify the growth conditions of ectomycorrhizal fungi (323).…”

“…AcH 505 is a fungus-specific MHB that produces fungus growth regulators and affects plant health and development. When tree roots were inoculated with a suspension of AcH 505 mycelia, significant stimulation of mycorrhiza formation was observed [19]. In the oak system, we also could find a slight increase in the number of mycorrhizas when the microcosm soil was inoculated with AcH 505.…”
