Abstract:In photovoltaic solar energy systems, power management algorithms (PMAs), usually called maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, are widely used for extracting maximum available power at every point in time. However, tracking the maximum power has negative effects on the availability of solar energy systems. This is due, mainly, to the created disturbances and thermal stresses on the associated power electronic converters (PECs). This work investigates the effects of PMA on the lifetime consumption, thermal stresses and failures on DC-DC converters used in solar systems. Firstly theoretical analysis and modelling of photovoltaic solar systems including converter's electro thermal characteristics were developed. Subsequently, experiments on photovoltaic solar systems were carried out using two different PMAs, namely, perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (IC). Real-time data was collected, under different operating conditions, including thermal behavior using thermal imaging camera and dSPACE. Converters' thermal cycling was found to be approximately 3 • C higher with the IC algorithm. The steady state temperature was 52.7 • C, for the IC while it was 42.6 • C for P&O. Although IC algorithm offers more accurate power management tool, it causes more severe thermal stresses which, in this study, has led to approximately 1.4 times greater life consumption compared to P&O.

This paper proposes the extension of the current control loops used in Modular Multilevel Converters to include semiconductors junction temperature as an operational constraint. A new controller is added to the inner current loop to modulate the current limits as a function of the temperature, providing an extension of the power transmission capacity without violating the thermal limits of the semiconductors. A numerical method to investigate the operation of converters with temperaturedependent current limits is proposed and the stability of the controller is analyzed and validated through simulations under steady and transient operations.

Pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques can be classified into continuous pulse width modulation (CPWM) and discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) types. The switching loss of power devices in DPWM converters is lower than that in CPWM converters. Lower loss could reduce the junction temperature fluctuation in converters of wind turbine generator system (WTGS) and may result in longer power devices lifetime. However, employing DPWM scheme under all WTGS operation conditions will lead to power quality concern. To solve this problem, a new hybrid modulation scheme which combines the CPWM and DPWM methods for WTGS converters is presented in this paper. In the presented hybrid modulation method, two modulation schemes are switched back and forth according to the wind speed in the wind farm site. The performance of the presented modulation scheme is verified and compared with that of other PWM schemes through a case study of 1.2 MW WTGS in long-term mission profiles. The results show that the lifetime of power devices with the presented hybrid approach is longer than that with the CPWM, and is shorter than that with the DPWMs. Moreover, the power quality of the power converters with the hybrid modulation scheme can be guaranteed in all operation conditions, which may not be achieved with DPWMs.
