Kinematic adjustments in the basketball jump shot against an opponent

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyse the adjustments in technique made by a basketball player when shooting against an opponent. The subjects used consisted of 10 professional basketball players of the Spanish First Division League. Threedimensional motion analysis based on video recordings (50 Hz) was used to obtain the kinematic characteristics of basketball jump shots with and without an opponent. It was found that when performing against an opponent the release angle of the ball increased, the¯ight time wa… Show more

“…The participants mostly used the standard shot in the first championship. The higher number of standard shots in the first championship was due to the greater number of shot attempts from zones A and C. In zone A, the standard shot increased because the presence of close opponents requires increasing the angle and release height of the ball, and this is achieved with the standard jump shot (Rojas et al, 2000). The shots from zone C were standard because the increase in the distance with regard to the hoop brings about an increase in the speed of ball release (Elliott, 1992;Miller & Bartlett, 1996).…”

“…Our practical interest lies in discovering which of the two styles might have more advantages when making the jump in sports where there is opposition such as basketball and volleyball, and where, in addition to the height reached by the CG, the time required for its execution and the spatial orientation of the corporal segments are factors that determine the performance of the takeoff (18). Moreover, taking into account the high number of jumps made in these sports, a second practical aspect is the prevention of injuries based on the analysis of the valúes reached in the vertical and horizontal forcé components pushing against the ground when taking off for both landing styles.…”

“…We can assume, that the faster shot meets the conditions of competitive game and therefore in training sessions it is needed to perform the shots according to the real game environment, paying attention to the proper form of technique. We agree with the position of Rojas et al (2000) occasionally to perform jump shots with an opponent.…”

“…The jump shot is one of the most frequently used methods of shooting in the modern basketball. For example in the Spanish league, it accounts for 41% of all points (Rojas et al, 2000). Based on the results of our previous research which enabled to determine the phase structure and create rhythm models of shooting in elite male basketball (Bazanov, 2001(Bazanov, , 2014) the purpose of this study was to improve the shooting rhythm of jump shot performances of male under 20 years old basketball players.…”
