This article deals with the notion of season, and illustrates an existing conflict, within organic agriculture, between symbolic and economic values. It takes the case of a polemic on the use of heating systems in greenhouse organic farming for tomato production. It asks and demonstrates how the organizations in and of market frame different seasonalities, either placing respect (symbolic value) for seasonality over economics, or vice versa. It identifies critical junctures that shaped the division in organic agriculture toward differing conception of seasonality, which oscillates between market logics in which its distinctiveness is (de)valued, symbolically and economically diminished or reasserted.

Depuis moins d’une dizaine d’années, la cause végétarienne jouit en France d’une visibilité grandissante au sein de l’espace public, médiatique, ainsi que dans les débats politiques. Cette publicisation de la cause s’accompagne d’une croissance particulièrement rapide du secteur des produits végétariens et végans sur le marché de l’alimentation. Dans cet article, nous montrons que des organisations du mouvement végétarien contribuent à cette évolution du marché en construisant les conditions d’une collaboration stratégique avec le monde économique, prenant place au sein d’un espace transversal articulant les intérêts des associations militantes et ceux de leurs interlocuteurs marchands. La littérature traitant des liens entre marché et mouvements sociaux a souvent observé les affrontements entre ces deux milieux ou les formes de collaboration mises en œuvre lors de l’élaboration de certifications, valeurs marchandes ou offres alternatives. Cet article entend contribuer à ces recherches en étudiant les relations directes engagées par les collaborations observées, en soulignant les conditions sociales qui favorisent les interactions entre mondes militants et marchands, ainsi que la porosité des frontières qui délimitent ces espaces.

Despite a common legal framework at EU-level, organic farming has developed differently in Member States. Previous analyses showed the influence of various factors on the development of the organic sector, including public policies, discourses, and marketing channels. Building on a relational perspective, we propose a conceptual framework that provides a situated understanding of national trajectories. We argue that the organic sector emerges based on relations between organic actors, policymakers, mainstream farmers associations, advocacy groups, and actors along the food chain. Based on these relations, we analyse the development of the organic sector in Austria, Italy, and France. We show that its dynamics result from a complex and evolving intertwining of relations over time. These dynamics are unpredictable, as they depend on whether and how actors can build and maintain relations between organic agriculture and broader issues in the agrifood system, such as the maintenance of family farms, environmental protection, gastronomic heritage, fairness in the food chain, or export promotion. The relational perspective highlights the historicity of relations, as well as the extent to which relations are influenced by the temporal and the spatial context. By framing the agrifood system as an ensemble of emergent social practices rather than a field of invariant logic and automatic unfoldings, the relational perspective emphasises the importance of seizing windows of opportunity, and the role of creativity in actions.
