La2Hf2O7:Ti4+ ceramic scintillator for x-ray imaging

Abstract: Transparent ceramic scintillators of La2Hf2O7:Ti4+ were developed by a novel combustion synthesis method. The optical transmittance for a 1.0-mm-thick specimen is about 60% of the incident light, and the x-ray stopping power is also quiet high. The broad emission band centered at 475 nm originates from the oxide-Ti4+ charge-transfer transitions, which renders fast decay time on the order of 10 μs. The highest relative light output has reached about 1.5 times that of Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) single crystal when excited … Show more

“…All wet chemistry methods involve mixing of reactant precursors at the molecular level, thus better chemical reactivity. These soft chemical methods for the preparation of Ln 2 Hf 2 O 7 include coprecipitation [22], the Pechini polymeric route [23], molten salt [24] and combustion processing [25][26][27][28].…”

“…Because of its chemical and structural flexibility, pyrochlore oxides have a wide range of properties including ionic conductivity, superconductivity, magnetoresistance, ferroelectricity, and so on. Furthermore, several researches on transparent pyrochlore ceramics have been performed for optical use in recent years …”

“…Then, rare earth ions were doped to achieve scintillation luminescence. Ce 3þ , Ti 4þ , and Pr 3þ have already been studied as the activator ions in RE 2 M 2 O 7 (RE ¼ Y, La; M ¼ Ti, Zr, Hf) [16] and La 2 Hf 2 O 7 [13,14], but no Ce 3þ -activated luminescence were found. While, the luminescence property of Eu 3þ -doped La 2-x Gd x Hf 2 O 7 have not been reported.…”
