“…Part of the fertile Caen Plain, this region was incorporated into the Roman province of Gaul (c. 56 BC) and then assimilated into the Kingdom of the Franks (c. AD 486), with little evidence of population replacement (James, 1991: 102-03;Hummer, 1998;Geary, 2002: 115-16). This is supported by osteological evidence from a number of cemeteries, including those sampled for this project (Pilet et al, 1990(Pilet et al, : 52, 1992. The burial grounds at Sannerville, Lirose, around 12 km east of Caen (49.18051; −0.22214), and at Le Martray, Giberville, around 7 km east of Caen (49.18313; −0.28454) were excavated in the 1980s.…”
