Background: Stunting in children becomes a health problem that gets priority and must be addressed immediately. Delayed development, a decrease in cognitive function and immune function and the risk of diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, hypertension and obesity are the effects of stunting. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of stunting in children aged 2-3 years in Jombang, East Java. Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with case control design. The study was carried out at Plandaan and Kabuh community health centers, Jombang, East Java, from March to April 2019. A sample of 200 children aged 2-3 years old was selected by fixed disease sampling. The dependent variable was stunting. The independent variables were maternal age, maternal height, maternal attitudes, maternal occupation, birth length, infant birth weight, exclusive breastfeeding, breastfeeding, family income, mother's education, and mother's knowledge. The data collection was done using questionnaires and analyzed with path analysis. Results: Stunting was directly and negatively affected by birth length ≥ 48 cm (b= -2.37; 95% CI= -3.25 to -1.50; p <0.001), infant birth weight ≥ 2500 g (b= -1.43; 95% CI= -2.53 to -0.32; p= 0.011), exclusive breastfeeding (b= -1.09; 95% CI= -1.90 to -0.28; p= 0.008), and timely complementary feeding (b= -1.09; 95% CI= -1.94 to -0.24; p= 0.012). Stunting was indirectly affected by family income, maternal age, maternal attitude, maternal height >150 cm, employed mother, maternal education, and maternal knowledge. Conclusion:Stunting is directly and negatively affected by birth length ≥48 cm, birth weight ≥ 2500 g, exclusive breastfeeding, timely complementary feeding. It was indirectly affected by family income, maternal age, attitude, maternal height >150 cm, employment, education, and knowledge.

ABSTRAKLatar Belakang: Permasalahan gizi kronis yang terjadi di dunia dan Indonesia salah satunya adalah stunting. Kurangnya asupan zat gizi merupakan salah satu penyebab langsung terjadinya stunting. Defisiensi zinc dapat menyebabkan kegagalan pertumbuhan, penurunan nafsu makan dan kegagalan perkembangan motorik. Kadar zinc rambut lebih tepat untuk menggambarkan status zinc pada masa lampau dan pelaksanaan yang lebih mudah, penanganan lebih sederhana dan konsentrasinya lebih peka. Tujuan: Menganalisis perbedaan kadar zinc rambut dan asupan makan (energi, protein, zinc dan zat besi) pada balita stunting dan non-stunting di Puskesmas Wilangan. Metode: Rancangan yang digunakan yaitu observasional analitik dengan case control design. Jumlah sampel 23 balita stunting dan 23 balita non-stunting. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan secara acak. Data tinggi badan menggunakan mikrotoice, kadar zinc rambut dengan metode Spektrofotometri Serapan Atom, asupan makan dengan food recall 3x24 jam dan wawancara kuesioner. Data dianalisis dengan uji chi-square (kadar zinc rambut), dan t-test dependen (asupan makan). Hasil: Terdapat perbedaan kadar zinc rambut (p=0,039), asupan energi (p=<0,001), asupan protein (p=<0,001), asupan zinc (p=<0,001) dan asupan zat besi (p=0,003) pada balita stunting dan non-stunting. Kesimpulan: Terdapat perbedaan kadar zinc rambut, asupan energi, protein, zinc dan zat besi balita stunting dan nonstunting. Kadar zinc rambut, asupan energi, protein, zinc dan zat besi pada balita stunting lebih rendah dibandingkan balita non-stunting di wilayah Puskesmas Wilangan.Kata kunci: kadar zinc rambut, stunting, balita ABSTRACT Background: Chronic nutritional problems that occur in the world and Indonesia is stunted. Background Linear growth retardation in the first two years of life leads to numerous harmful consequences. Lack of diversity in the diet and inadequate amounts of complementary food have been associated with stunted growth in children. Objective To assess the dietary intake and investigate for associations with stunting among children aged 6-23 months. Methods This case-control study compared the dietary intake of children aged 6-23 months with and without stunting in the South and West Wewewa subdistricts of Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Complementary food types, dietary diversity, and nutritional intake were assessed and compared between groups. Nutrient intake sufficiency and stunting were analyzed by logistic regression. Results A total of 200 participants were equally allocated into groups with and without stunting. Only 6% of stunted children received adequate complementary food diversity compared to 14% of non-stunted children (P=0.05). The stunted group had significantly lower consumption of flesh foods (beef, fish, poultry, organ meat, and other kinds of meat) compared to the non-stunted group (7% vs. 16% of subjects, respectively; P<0.05). The median total protein intake was also significantly lower in stunted children compared to non-stunted children [7.72 (IQR 6.46, 11.31) g vs. 10.02 (IQR 6.53, 13.95) g, respectively; P<0.05] although no association was found between protein intake sufficiency and stunting in the multivariate analysis. Only maternal unemployment was positively associated with stunting (OR 2.32; 95%CI 1.26 to 4.26). Conclusion Overall, most subjects did not receive sufficient amounts of nutrients. Although dietary diversity was not found to be significantly different between those with and without stunting, a significantly lower proportion of stunted children consumed flesh food. The stunted group also received significantly lower protein from their diet although no association was found between nutrient intake sufficiency and stunting. Further studies are needed to longitudinally assess the effects of macronutrient and micronutrient intake sufficiency on linear growth in children.
