Marginal and Internal Adaptation of Zirconia Crowns: A Comparative Study of Assessment Methods

Abstract: Marginal and internal adaptation is critical for the success of indirect restorations. New imaging systems make it possible to evaluate these parameters with precision and nondestructively. This study evaluated the marginal and internal adaptation of zirconia copings fabricated with two different systems using both silicone replica and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) assessment methods. A metal master model, representing a preparation for an all-ceramic full crown, was digitally scanned and polycrystalline… Show more

“…In the current study, the marginal and internal fit of the Ni-Cr metal copings assessed by the micro-CT technique and replica technique showed no statistical significant difference. In a study conducted by Cunali et al ,[ 28 ] they compared the marginal and internal adaptation of zirconia crowns and evaluated the marginal and internal adaptation by two different assessment techniques. They conducted the study differently, wherein the Type IV gypsum used in our current study was replaced by the regular body polyvinyl siloxane material.…”

“…There is no consensus on which is the best nondestructive method for fit assessment of indirect restorations. The replica is one of the most commonly used methods to assess both marginal and internal discrepancies 25 and has been shown to yield fit accuracy values that strongly correlate with those of micro-CT. 37 In the present study, care was taken to optimize the replicas quality and to use a large number of measuring points (65) exceeding that recommended by Groten et al 30 (50) to produce clinically relevant discrepancy measurements. In addition, the implemented experimental design limited the assessment of fit differences between groups to the material and fabrication technique by eliminating potential errors associated with repeated conventional impressions or digital scans.…”

“…These conditions cannot be observed only comparing the initial and final mass of the samples, leading to the search for new methodologies (8). Micro-CT is widely applied due its ability to allows three-dimensional evaluation (22). The volumetric change for endodontic materials measured by micro-CT after immersion in distilled water for time intervals of 7 and 30 days allows threedimensional evaluation, complementing the conventional solubility test (6,8).…”
