“…4b). In particular, the K IC value of HEC-3 is almost three times greater than that of metal carbides and nitrides [10,[40][41][42][43][44][45], which perhaps implies the beneficial effect of the multi-anionic structure on fracture toughness. To investigate the propagation behavior of cracks, HEC-3 was selected for analysis.…”

“…Although nucleate agglomerations grow in the shape of islands, they contact each other and turn into lamellar growth before they grow up. On the other hand, doping of Ta increases the compressive stress during the growth of islands [40], and the effect of the stress suppression on the edge of islands also makes the size of islands more uniform [41]. In the chemical composition of spot 3 in the convex area, the atom percent of C is approximately equal to the sum of Hf and Ta, the atomic percentage of tantalum and hafnium is about 1:1, indicating that the chemical composition of solid solution is Hf 0.5 Ta 0.5 C. The content of C on spot 4 in the concave area is slightly higher than the sum of Hf and Ta, demonstrating that in addition to the existence of Hf 0.5 Ta 0.5 C, there is also a small amount of graphite, which is also consistent with the XRD pattern in Figure 3.…”

“…The concave and convex in the HfTaC 2 coatings are not as evident as those in the HfC coatings, the reason for which is that besides Hf and C atoms, there are also Ta atoms, face-centered cubic hafnium carbide and tantalum carbide formed solid solution with single-phase characteristics. The radius of hafnium and tantalum atoms are different, lattice distortion occurred when solid solution was formed, which made the uniformity of island size enhanced because of the stress suppression at the island edges [40,41]. Another reason for the small surface roughness value of the HfTaC 2 coatings is that the sputtering rate of tantalum is large, so the nucleation position on the surface of the matrix increases, forming a small size and a large number of islands.…”
