Migration and winter distribution of Iberian and central European black storks Ciconia nigra moving to Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar: a comparative study

Abstract: This paper compares the migratory movements of Iberian and central European satellite‐tagged black storks Ciconia nigra moving to Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar. Results show that the populations differ in departure dates from breeding areas (central European birds start to move 15 d before Iberian birds), cross the Strait of Gibraltar together and reach the Sahel on similar dates. This synchronic arrival to the Sahel may be related with the onset of suitable conditions for the species after summer rain… Show more

Routes of the birds moving through Iberia were provided by l'Office National des Forêts (ONF), Station Ornithologique du Bec d'Allier (SOBA), Nature Nièvre, Flying Over Natura 2000 project and several Iberian projects (Cano and Tellería ). These autumnal pathways and 12 spring return routes were used to establish the winter period (see above).…”

“…The black stork Ciconia nigra is a long‐distance migratory bird that, in the western Palaearctic, shows a migratory divide (Bobek et al ). The western route crosses Europe and northern Africa to reach the west and central Sahel (Jadoul et al , Bobek et al , Chevallier et al , Cano and Tellería ). In the last two decades, an increasing number of individuals remain to winter in the Iberian Peninsula (Cano , ).…”

“…Thus, the link between movement ecology and biodiversity is a key factor in understanding ecological and evolutionary processes and in improving the efficacy of conservation efforts12. Several recent examples show the importance of movement ecology studies in topics such as age-related aspects of migration3, the energetics and timing of migration4, the conservation of migratory flyways5, the selection of stopover, wintering and breeding areas6789, the influence of environmental conditions10, transboundary management policies11 and foraging behaviour12.…”

“…European Black Storks are long-distance migrants, reaching their wintering grounds either on a westerly route across Gibraltar to Western Africa or on an easterly via the Bosphorus and Israel to Eastern Africa. Individuals from the northern part of the species range undertake long journeys of up to 6000-7000 km each fall and spring (Sellis 2012;Tamas 2012;Cano and Tellería 2013;Elliott et al 2014a).…”
