“…A proprietary extract (D-Fraction) of Grifola frondosa, also called Maitake, caused small changes in CD4þ and CD8þ counts while increasing NK cell activity in all 10 advanced cancer patients [96]. Oral polysaccharides from Ganoderma lucidum, also known as Ling zhi or Reishi, when given in a dose of 5.4 g per day for 12 weeks, improved the mitogenic reactivity to phytohemagglutinin, increased CD3, CD4, CD8, and CD56 lymphocyte counts, and increased NK activity, while elevating plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, and gamma interferon, and decreasing tumor necrosis factor alpha and IL-3 in 46 subjects with a variety of advanced stage cancers [97,98].
