Monitoring of the Influence of Landfills on the Atmospheric Air Using Bioindication Methods on the Example of the Zhytomyr Landfill, Ukraine

Abstract: The paper presents the results of research on the implementation of monitoring of the landfills influence on the atmospheric air using bioindication methods on the example of the Zhytomyr landfill (Ukraine)-one of the typical Ukrainian landfills, which is operated with minimal environmental protection measures. A comprehensive study of atmospheric air pollution in the landfill area was carried out using a human sensor system and an integral assessment using bioindication (lichens were chosen as bioindicators).… Show more

“…At the present stage, more and more attention is paid to environmental safety in connection with the presence of real ecological danger for the environment as a result of the action of many threats of natural, man-made, and socio-political factors. The main technogenic threats include pollution of the Earth's surface with solid household (Popovych et al, 2020, Voytovych et al, 2020) and industrial (Malovanyy et al, 2020, Tymchuk et al, 2020 waste, pollution of surface and groundwater by sewage effluents, as well as hazardous industrial effluents (Malovanyy et al, 2014, Tulaydan et al, 2017, the treatment of which is insufficient at sewage and local treatment facilities, as well as atmospheric pollution by emissions (Ablieieva et al, 2022, Malovanyy et al al., 2021. It should be emphasized that technogenic development is a characteristic feature of today.…”

“…The uncontrolled emission of landfill gas into the atmosphere has several adverse effects, which include the pollution of the surrounding environment with toxic substances that not only pose health risks but also create an unpleasant odor [ 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…In the past, waste landfilling followed from the lack of specific policies of the various countries that allowed for the landfilling of the municipal waste stream, which was driven by the high costs of using alternative methods in municipal management. The implemented current legal conditions in the field of biodegradable waste management in the EU countries regulate this area, excluding the storage of bio waste in favor of other available technologies including aerobic and anaerobic processes under controlled conditions [Malovanyy et al, 2021;den Boer et al, 2020;Gronba-Chyła et al, 2021].…”
