Mucinous adenocarcinoma and strumal carcinoid tumor arising in one mature cystic teratoma of the ovary with synchronous cervical cancer

Abstract: Malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma is an uncommon complication. While any of the constituent tissues of a teratoma has the potential to undergo malignant transformation, squamous cell carcinoma is the most commonly associated cancer. We present an unusual case of a postmenopausal woman with synchronous mucinous adenocarcinoma and strumal carcinoid tumor from one of two ovarian mature cystic teratomas (one in each ovary) with synchronous cervical cancer. We suggest that malignant transformation … Show more

“…Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common form of transformation (5). Transformation into other types of tumor, including thyroid carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and carcinoid tumor, has also been reported (5,6). Carcinoid tumors are slow-growing tumors, originating from neuroendocrine cells, which are classified into four categories: i) Insular; ii) trabecular; iii) strumal; and iv) mucinous types (7,8).…”

“…Matür kistik teratomun herhangi bir komponentinden gelişebilir ancak olguların yaklaşık olarak %80'inde skuamöz hücreli karsinom olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır (9) . Daha az sıklıkla tiroid karsinomları, adenokarsinomalar ve karsinoid tümörler görülmektedir (8,10) . Çok ender olarak bir matür kistik teratom malign transformasyonun multipl tiplerini içerebilir.…”

“…Additional therapy is not required for such cancers at an early stage, but postoperative therapy is desirable in advanced cases. Chemotherapeutic regimens for germ cell tumor, regimens for histological types of malignant transformation and the use of texane have been reported [18] , but none of these regimens are established treatments. For adenocarcinoma, regimens using 5-fl uorouracil, CDDP, paclitaxel, mitomycin, cyclophosphamide and CPT-11 have occasionally been reported [19][20][21][22] .…”
