Myoepithelial carcinoma of the nasopharynx: Case report of a rare entity

Abstract: Myoepithelial carcinomas are rare tumors of salivary glands. Most occur in the parotid gland buta few other sites of origin have also been described. Myoepithelial carcinoma of the nasopharynx has only been reported very few times. Because the lesion is so rare in the nasopharynx, there are no specific guidelines for its treatment. We present a rare case of myoepithelial carcinoma in the nasopharynx and discuss its diagnostic and therapeutic aspects.

“…Meanwhile, according to the previous 6 cases about nasopharyngeal myoepithelial carcinoma, the patient of 1 case was treated by the midfacial degloving approach with postoperative CRT, but developed intracranial and pulmonary metastases 15 months later and died 4 weeks later . Three cases applied the infratemporal fossa approach type C, lateronasal approach, or transpalatal approach with mandibulotomy to enable adequate resection, and the patients lived without recurrence and metastasis during follow‐up . In another case, the patient was free of progression at 5 months follow‐up after CRT without surgery .…”

“…Interestingly, these gene rearrangements may also be seen in a subset of MECAs with predominantly clear cell features in the salivary gland [16]. MECAs are extremely rare in the NP, with only 3 previously reported cases (one of which was reported in German and not accessible for review) [17][18][19]. We herein report a 4th case of a patient with nasopharyngeal MECA and review the other two cases in the English literature.…”

“…[9] Other than salivary glands, this tumor also occurs in the breast, skin, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, larynx and lung. [101112] We herein report a rare case of myoepithelial carcinoma of a 55-year-old female at buccal mucosa, a rare location. To the best of our knowledge, there are only eight cases of myoepithelial carcinoma of buccal mucosa are reported in the literature.…”
