Native and introduced fish species richness in French lakes: local and regional influences

Abstract: Aim To analyse the importance of local and regional influences on the patterns of species richness in natural and man-made lakes and to infer the impacts of humanmediated introductions on these patterns. Location France. Methods Species occurrence data were gathered for 25 natural and 51 man-made lakes. Analysis is based on regression models of local richness against their related regional richness and lake environmental variables. ResultsLocal native richness was mostly controlled by the regional richness. Con… Show more

“…Freshwater fish are one of the animal groups with higher number of invasive species (Hulme et al, 2009). The weak resistance of lacustrine habitats to fish invaders (Irz et al, 2004) results in within-lake alterations in trophic relationships and substantial effects on lake biodiversity (Vitule et al, 2009). Since their impact is widespread and relatively well documented, the changes in trophic relationships in lakes associated with invasive species offer new opportunities to study the effects of trophic changes in different biogeographic regions (Brose et al, 2004).…”

“…Fish data were collected from 30 natural lakes and 59 reservoirs among these 146 lakes (Figure 1). The lake data set represented a wide range of each environmental condition (Table 1), but as demonstrated in previous works on French lakes (Argillier et al 2002b;Irz et al 2004a;Irz et al 2002), sites with altitudes over 1500 meters above sea level had to be excluded from these analyses because they shelter only introduced fish species. Scheduled locations of Figure 1 and Table 1.…”

“…Ce potentiel ou cette stratégie repré-sente certains risques pour les espèces natives. A contrario, le dé-faut d'espèces lacustres adaptées à ces conditions thermiques offre un espace littoral vacant à la perche soleil (Irz et al, 2004a(Irz et al, , 2004bDembski, 2005 ;Dembski et al, 2006Dembski et al, , 2008.…”
