Near infrared broadband emission of bismuth-doped aluminophosphate glass

Abstract: Near infrared broadband emission characteristics of bismuth-doped aluminophosphate glass have been investigated. Broad infrared emissions peaking at 1210nm, 1173nm and 1300nm were observed when the glass was pumped by 405nm laser diode (LD), 514nm Ar+ laser and 808nm LD, respectively. The full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) are 235nm, 207nm and 300nm for the emissions at 1210nm, 1173nm and 1300nm, respectively. Based on the energy matching conditions, it is suggested that the infrared emission may be ascribed … Show more

“…1(a). In these spectra, one can observe one absorption band in the region from 2750 to 3950 nm, which is associated to the stretching vibration of OH À groups such as Te(OH) 6 and H 2 TeO 6 [36]. The results of the estimated free OH À concentrations and absorption coefficients are depicted in Fig.…”

“…Nevertheless, it is well known that the emission and amplification of the RE cover separately the O-, E-, S-, C-, L-and U-bands. The enhancement of the amplification bandwidth is thus a current challenge and several approaches have been explored in view to achieve optical amplification covering the entire telecommunication window by: (i) doping glass with metal ions such as Bismuth [5][6][7] or Nickel [8]; (ii) generating supercontinuum light in highly non-linear optical fiber [9][10][11] and (iii) co-doping glass with RE ions [12][13][14]. For the latter, tellurite host glass are usually preferred own to its properties cited above.…”

“…11 In recent years, a number of hosts were investigated and broadband infrared luminescence was reported in silicate, 12,13 germanium, 14 phosphate, 15 and barium borate glasses. 16 It is exciting that optical amplification and lasing operation were also realized at present.…”

“…The product of the stimulated emission cross section and the lifetime, σ em τ, is an important parameter for characterizing laser materials because the laser threshold is proportional to (σ em τ) − 1 . The σ em τ product of the Bi-ions in PBA glass is 5.3 × 10 − 24 cm 2 s which is larger than that in Bi-doped germinant (σ em τ =4.2×10 − 24 cm 2 s) [4] and phosphate (σ em τ =5.0×10 − 24 cm 2 s) [5] glasses and is about 5 times larger than that of Ti:Al 2 O 3 (σ em τ =1.0×10 − 24 cm 2 s) [11].The result indicates that the glass is a promising material for broadband optical amplifier and tunable laser.…”

“…Till now, researchers have discovered the broadband infrared luminescence of Bi-ions in different glass systems [1,[4][5][6]. Although several models based essentially on the presence of Bi-ions in glass have been proposed in the literature (e.g.…”
