Background: Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) has been related to impaired fetal growth, possibly by affecting hematopoiesis. This study aimed to analyze the most frequent hematological alterations in preterm infants born to mothers with PIH. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in newborns born to mothers with PIH. We reviewed 130 hemograms of preterm infants: 45 from mothers with PIH, 71 with preeclampsia, and 14 with HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count). Normality, cytosis conditions, or cytopenia values were adjusted for gestational ages. Differences between groups were analyzed with classical and Bayesian statistics (BF01 = null/alternative hypothesis ratio). Results: Anemia was found in only 1.2% of newborns. In the white blood cell count, the most frequent finding was lymphopenia (56.2%) and monocytosis (38.5%) (p = 0.6, FB01 = 249 y p = 0.81, FB01 = 19.9). Thrombocytopenia was found in 12.5% (p = 0.56, FB01 = 67). No significant differences were observed among PIH groups. Conclusions: Hematological alterations of newborns born to mothers with PIH are frequent and do not show a distinct pattern related to the severity of the affection in the mother. We recommend a full hematological evaluation in these preterm neonates.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a multisystemic syndrome specific to pregnancy. Although PE is the leading cause of death from complications associated with pregnancy, its aetiology is still unknown. In PE, lipid metabolism is altered. When lipids are damaged, both the mother and the foetus may be at risk. Lipoproteins contain apolipoproteins, triacylglycerols, free and esterified cholesterol, and phospholipids, all of which are susceptible to oxidative stress when high levels of oxygen and nitrogen free radicals are present. Lipoperoxidation can occur in three stages: mild, moderate, and severe. In severe lipid damage, highly toxic products such as malondialdehyde (MDA) can be generated; under these conditions, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) proteins can be oxidized (oxLDL). oxLDL is a biomolecule that can affect the production of nitric oxide (NO), the main vasodilator derived from the endothelium. oxLDL can interfere with the transduction of the signals responsible for triggering the activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), causing reduced vasodilation and endothelial dysfunction, which are the main characteristics of preeclampsia. The objective of the review was to analyse the information the current information about exists about the impact generated by the oxidation of LDL and HDL lipoproteins in neonates of women with preeclampsia and how these alterations can predispose the neonate to develop diseases in adulthood.PE can cause foetal loss, intrauterine growth restriction, or developmental complications. Neonates of mothers with PE have a high risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, mental retardation, sensory deficiencies and an increased risk of developing metabolic diseases. PE not only affects the foetus, generating complications during pregnancy but also predisposes them to chronic diseases in adulthood.

Preeclampsia es un síndrome específico del embarazo que puede afectar a todos los sistemas orgánicos, se define como el estado hipertensivo acompañado de proteinuria el cual puede llevar a serias complicaciones e incluso a la muerte tanto de la madre como del feto o neonato. En países en vías de desarrollo, una mujer tiene siete veces más probabilidades de desarrollar preeclampsia, comparado con una mujer que vive en un país desarrollado. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de 196 pacientes preeclámpticas y sus complicaciones maternas neonatales atendidas en el Hospital Regional de Zacapa, Guatemala, en los años 2013 a 2017. De las 196 pacientes preeclámpticas el 44% presentó complicaciones, siendo las más frecuentes el parto pretérmino con 37%, el síndrome de Hellp con el 30%, eclampsia 10% y oligohidramnios 10%. No se presentó ningún caso de muerte materna. De los 196 hijos de madres preeclámpticas el 61% presentaron complicaciones, las más frecuentes fueron bajo peso al nacer con 21.5%, pequeño para edad gestacional 20.6%, restricción del crecimiento intrauterino con 20.3% y prematurez 12.9%.
