NFIRAOS: first facility AO system for the Thirty Meter Telescope

Abstract: NFIRAOS, the Thirty Meter Telescope's first adaptive optics system is an order 60x60 Multi-Conjugate AO system with two deformable mirrors. Although most observing will use 6 laser guide stars, it also has an NGS-only mode. Uniquely, NFIRAOS is cooled to -30 °C to reduce thermal background. NFIRAOS delivers a 2-arcminute beam to three client instruments, and relies on up to three IR WFSs in each instrument. We present recent work including: robust automated acquisition on these IR WFSs; trade-off studies for a… Show more

“…16 P. Wizinowich each adaptive secondary reflects the light from an 8 m primary mirror. The 492-segment Thirty Metre Telescope will have a MCAO system [44]. The 39-m, 798-segment, European-Extremely Large Telescope will have LTAO and MCAO capabilities; mirror 4 in the telescope's beam train will be a flat adaptive mirror [45].…”

“…It is discussed in detail in other papers [1] [2] . For the purposes of real-time control, NFIRAOS contains two deformable mirrors, one tip/tilt stage, six Shack-Hartmann LGS WFS (laser guide star wavefront sensors) and one natural guide star pyramid WFS.…”

“…1 The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), one of the next generation ground-based telescopes, is being designed with AO as an integral part of the facility. The first-light AO system (NFIRAOS), 2,3 optimized for observations at near-IR wavelengths, will use a sodium laser guide star (LGS) system in order to maximize the area of sky where they can obtain diffraction-limited observations.…”
