Observation of enhanced transmission for s-polarized light through a subwavelength slit

Abstract: Enhanced optical transmission (EOT) through a single aperture is usually achieved by exciting surface plasmon polaritons with periodic grooves. Surface plasmon polaritons are only excited by p-polarized incident light, i.e. with the electric field perpendicular to the direction of the grooves. The present study experimentally investigates EOT for s-polarized light. A subwavelength slit surrounded on each side by periodic grooves has been fabricated in a gold film and covered by a thin dielectric layer. The exc… Show more

“…Thus no standing wave is possible inside the metallic grating in this regime and no ET can be observed. However, an addition of a thin dielectric layer on top of the grating allows for a standing wave in the system even for λ∕n s > 2a, given that λ∕n 2 < d [22,33]. This is because, under these conditions, while there is no longer a propagating mode inside the grating, the thin dielectric layer (with refractive index n 2 ) can still support one, allowing for a standing wave in the thin dielectric layer.…”

“…This means that the EOT only can be achieved for TM wave. However, in recent years, the possibility of EOT for TE wave was also achieved not only by theories and numerical calculations [13][14][15][16][17] but also by experiments [17,18]. And some researchers even achieved the realization of the EOT through one configuration both for TM wave and TE wave at a same wavelength [19][20][21].…”
