Observations and modelling of glyoxal in the tropical Atlantic marine boundary layer

Abstract: Abstract. In situ field measurements of glyoxal at the surface in the tropical marine boundary layer have been made with a temporal resolution of a few minutes during two 4-week campaigns in June–July and August–September 2014 at the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVAO; 16∘52′ N, 24∘52′ W). Using laser-induced phosphorescence spectroscopy with an instrumental detection limit of ∼1 pptv (1 h averaging), volume mixing ratios up to ∼10 pptv were observed, with 24 h averaged mixing ratios of 4.9 and 6.3 pptv … Show more

“…Our measurements confirm previous reports of (at least) occasionally elevated glyoxal (1-140 ppt) in the marine boundary layer over the remote ocean (e.g. Zhou and Mopper, 1990;Sinreich et al, 2010;Coburn et al, 2014;Mahajan et al, 2014;Lawson et al, 2015;Volkamer et al, 2015;Chiu et al, 2017;Walker et al, 2022).…”

“…Our findings of enhanced glyoxal in the tropical marine boundary layer are in agreement with previous reports from the tropical Pacific and Atlantic (e.g. Sinreich et al, 2010;Walker et al, 2022) but are not reproduced by the model (Fig. 11f).…”

“…36 However, there is a general model underestimation of the in situ glyoxal concentration and especially during the night where OH concentration depletes. 37 It would thus be interesting to implement this formation pathway of glyoxal from C 2 H 4 ozonolysis and see if it could overcome this disagreement.…”
