OCCURRENCE OF CYHEXATIN AND DICOFOL RESISTANCE IN THE EUROPEAN RED MITE, PANONYCHUS ULMI (KOCH) (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE), IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO

Abstract: Laboratory bioassays showed the occurrence of 8.5-fold resistance to cyhexatin and ca. 15-fold resistance to dicofol in laboratory-selected populations of European red mite (Panonychus ulmi (Koch)). Surveys, in 1984, of 45 orchards, using field-collected mites exposed to discriminating concentrations of cyhexatin or dicofol, detected resistance to cyhexatin in ca. 29% of the populations. Resistance to dicofol was identified in 2 of 45 assays.

“…Mites used in tests were from colonies maintained on peach Prunus persica Batch seedlings as described by Pree and Wagner (1987). Populations were held in separate rearing cabinets at 24 ± 2°C, 60% RH and 18L:6D photoperiod.…”

“…Most of these represent new classes of chemistries, which are reported to have unique modes of action not previously exploited for control. We have previously documented resistance in populations of the European red mite from Ontario which are resistant to organochlorine compounds (dicofol), to organotins (fenbutatin oxide) and to the ovicides, clofentezine and hexythiazox (Pree and Wagner 1987;Pree et al 2002). Colonies of P. ulmi used in those studies have been maintained and selected in the laboratory for use in other studies.…”

“…Such control failures have been reported for organophosphorus compounds (OPs) for many decades, and more recently to the newer compounds such as bromopropylate, clofentezine, cyhexatin, fenazaquin, fenpyroximate, hexythiazox, propargite and tebufenpyrad (e.g. Graham 1991;Pree and Wagner 1987;Whalon et al 2008).…”
