Carbon monoxide forms a host of metal carbonyl complexes, at least one for every transition metal. Mononuclear, polynuclear, and heteronuclear metal carbonyls are all known. The complexes, of general formula M x (CO) y , may be charged or neutral; the metal or metals are in the zero oxidation state. Metal carbonyls are useful as reagents and catalysts in organic synthesis, and play a role in both the Reppe and the oxo processes, as well as in the preparation of synthetic fuels and in vapor deposition of purified metals. The structure and bonding of the metal carbonyls, including that of cluster compounds, follow well‐defined rules. Synthesis of the metal carbonyls usually proceeds either from the reduction of the corresponding metal, initially in the form of a metallic salt, or via condensation of lower molecular weight compounds.

The discovery of dicyclopentadienyliron (ferrocene) in 1951 led to the development of an entirely new area of organometallic chemistry that of the pi‐metallohydrocarbons. Representative compounds are the pi‐metalloarenes such as dibenzenechromium, the pi‐methallopseudoarenes such as ferrocene, and the pi‐metalloolefin complexes such as butadiene iron tricarbonyl Since there is a great amount of literature available at this time, the treatment here is limited to three dimensions: to include only compounds containing cyclopentadienyl rings, of these to include only those which have shown to undergo aromatic substitution,reactions and within this group only synthetic aspects of their chemistry. This nearly restricts the discussion to syntheses of substituted ferrocenes.

The reaction between RMgX and TiCl4,2L (L = pyridine, piperidine or quinoleine) is shown to give a high yield of organo‐titanium (IV) compounds. As expected, the decomposition of the latter is reduced to a minimum by the ligand L initially present, allowing the preparation of etheral solutions of R4Ti (R = benzyl, phenyl or butyl). R4Ti is obtained whatever may be the initial molar ratio of RMgX/TiCl4, 2L.
