P‐124: Bending Shift Free Plastic Liquid Crystal Display

Abstract: A special cell structure design using in plastic liquid crystal display (LCD) was successfully fabricated to overcome upper and bottom substrate alignment shift during bending situation. Bending shift for plastic LCD before and after the application of dual substrate photo spacer (PS) design were 66.5 and less than 5 um, respectively.

“…1(b)). 3)-5) Such structures have been made using techniques including thermal nanoimprinting 3)4) and photolithography 5) . However, a thermal process is not suitable for roll-to-roll processing of flexible LCDs due to the generally poor thermal stability of the plastic substrates; a low-temperature printing process is thus required.…”

“…In automotive application, 13,14 the curvature usually stays between R 50 and R 1000 3 . In consideration of cost, functionality, and manipulability, different substrates are applied for the curved LCD panels, such as metal foil, 15–17 ultra‐thin glass, 18 and plastic substrate, 19–21 but the ultra‐thin glass (0.4‐mm thickness or thinner) and colorless polyimide (PI) substrates are the most popular substrates for the curved display due to their high transmittance, good thermal stability, and chemical resistivity. The LCD panels with small curvature require colorless polyimide substrate owing to its flexibility.…”

“…The concept of placing the most fragile layers closed to the neutral plane of the devices to increase the reliability of flexible devices has been attempted 14 . To overcome the upper and bottom substrate alignment shift during bending stress, a particular cell structure design using in plastic liquid crystal display has also been attempted 15 …”
