PCPA Increases Aggression in Male Firemouth Cichlids

Abstract: We observed the effect of the 5-hydroxytryptamine synthesis inhibitor p-chlorophenylalanine on aggression in male firemouth cichlids (Cichlasoma meeki). p-Chlorophenylalanine-treated firemouths showed a significantly greater number of mirror-directed bites as compared with saline-injected controls. This finding is consistent with the effects of this drug on social aggression in mammals and birds and supplements previous reports that 5-hydroxytryptamine inhibits aggression in fish.

“…The monoamine 5-HT suppresses aggressive behavior (Adams et al, 1996), whereas DA stimulates it (Munro, 1986;Tiersch and Griffith, 1988). In addition, exposure to tryptophan, a precursor of 5-HT, stimulates serotonergic neurons and increases locomotor activity in medaka (Koutoku et al, 2003).…”

“…In fish, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) suppresses aggressive behavior (Adams et al, 1996), whereas dopamine (DA) stimulates such behavior (Munro, 1986;Tiersch and Griffith, 1988). In addition, TBT alters metabolism of DA in the midbrain of mice (Tsunoda et al, 2004) and reduces the concentrations of DA norepinephrine (NE), and serotonin in the whole brain of rats (Elsabbagh et al, 2002).…”

(Linnoila et al, 1983;Linnoila, Virkkunen, 1992;Arango et al, 2003).…”

“…Since 5HT was reported to suppress aggressive behavior in teleost fish (Adams et al ., 1996), it was suggested that TRP stimulated brain 5HTnergic systems and then altered aggressive behavior. This result demonstrated that exogenous TRP can modify the brain 5HTnergic activity.…”
