“…Contrary to other reports, our data indicate that multifocality, or size, gender do not predict outcome. Multifocality, which is more frequent in paediatric than in adult patients, has been considered a risk factor for recurrence in some but not all studies.…”
In spite of the aggressive presentations at diagnosis, paediatric patients with DTC show an excellent response to treatment and often a favourable outcome. N1b status should be considered a strong predictor of persistent/recurrent disease which, as in adults, is better predicted by ongoing risk stratification.

“…We agree that patients who have metastatic disease and are younger than 20 y old frequently have an excellent response to RAI treatment, with previous reports showing a 100% 10-y survival rate at both Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and Gustave Roussy (GR) (2,3). In our study, such patients represent 9.9% of the GR cohort (23/231) and 7.4% of the MSKCC cohort (9/121).…”
“…Finally, 16 studies with total 732 patients with DSVPTC were included for final analysis ( Fig. 1) (5,6,7,8,9,10,11,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28). The time interval for included studies ranged from 1987 to August 2016.…”
DSVPTCs should be considered high-risk PTCs because of high propensity for tumor invasion, metastasis, relapse and mortality. Aggressiveness of DSVPTCs might be related to a different molecular pathway than that in cPTCs.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
