Pericardial Mesothelioma with Cardiac Tamponade in a Dog

Abstract: 496Brief Communication vitamin E [l]. Intramuscular administration in this dog may have made elimination of the compound more difficult than oral administration would have.Although no assay of selenium concentration could be done on formalinized tissues, the history of repeated administration of a selenium-tocopherol emulsion designed for the treatment and prevention of selenium deficiency in cattle indicates that the lesions seen were the result of chronic selenium toxicosis. “…Reported canine pericardial neoplasms include hemangiosarcoma, mesothelioma, chemodectoma, thyroid carcinoma, carcinoma, fibroma, and lipoma. 4,[9][10][11] Extraskeletal chondrosarcomas are extremely rare in both humans and domestic animals. 2,12 Canine extraskeletal chondrosarcomas have been reported to occur in the mitral leaflet, right atrium, aorta, larynx, lung, and omentum.…”

“…In reported cases of pericardial mesothelioma, treatment consisting of repeated pericardiocentesis variably followed by subsequent subtotal pericardectomy was unsuccessful. 10,11 The dogs of one report developed pleural effusion postsurgically and died. At necropsy, 1 dog had evidence of metastasis of the mesothelioma to the lung, epicardium, and diaphragm.…”

“…Other mesenchymal and epithelial tumors have been sporadically reported. 1,4,7,8,11,12,14,15,17,18,20,23,[25][26][27] Ratios of primary intrapericardial versus metastatic neoplasms and of metastatic mesenchymatous versus epithelial neoplasms are unknown.A 6-year retrospective study was done to determine the incidence of primary or metastatic intrapericardial neoplasia in the dog. The relative frequency of primary versus metastatic and metastatic mesenchymatous versus epithelial neoplasms affecting the pericardium, the heart base, and the pericardium were also investigated.…”

“…While the tumour shows its effect where it is first located, it is recognised as a malignant tumour as it invades the lymph vessels or rapidly spreads by implantation (Ikede et al 1980). In the present case, nodular or velvet-like proliferative lesions were observed on the visceral pleura, diaphragm and the esophageal serosa, as well as the pericardial surface.…”
