Introduction: Periodontal disease is one of the main dental diseases that affect millions of people around the world. Modern nanotechnology progression and renovations through nanodentistry providing a suitable solution for the treatment of many dental illnesses including periodontal disease. Aim: Histological and ultrastructural evaluation of the effect of silver nanoparticles in treatment of periodontitis in albino rats. Materials and methods: A total of 18 adults male albino rats with body weight ranging from 150 to 180 gm were used and divided into three groups group 1: served as control, group 2: used for induction of experimental periodontitis using wiring around the cervix of mandibular central incisors for two weeks, and group 3: after induction of experimental periodontitis as in group 2 they were subjected to intraperitoneal injection with silver nanoparticles for the treatment of periodontitis three times per week for four weeks. Results: Histological and ultrastructural investigation revealed that periodontal ligament around ligated mandibular incisors showed marked improvement in the degenerated fibers after injection with silver nanoparticles in group 3 compared to group 2 as the fibers regained their association in strong bundles and they regained their attachment to regenerated bone and tooth surface. Conclusions: Marked regeneration of the periodontium of periodontally affected ligated mandibular incisors reflected that silver nanoparticles have a great anti-inflammatory effect

Nanotechnology is one of the most promising technologies of the 21 st century. The remarkable application of nanotechnology for targeted site-specific drug delivery has created significant improvements in the bioavailability and bio-distribution of the drugs. There have been various efforts in designing different drug delivery systems for periodontal diseases based on the functionalized nanoparticles. The aim of this article is to review the recent information regarding the experimental progress on nanotechnology in the treatment of various periodontal diseases comprehensively. Novel applications of different types of nanomaterials (nanoparticles to 3D nanostructured scaffolds) for treating periodontal diseases are summarized. Moreover, this paper also focuses on basic principles of utilizing the nanomaterials to create better drug delivery systems for treatment of periodontal diseases. In nowadays, research in nanoscale science has been greatly developing and obtaining more interests. Numerous research activities in the last two decades focus on exploring nanoscience, understanding the fundamentals, and developing technical solutions. Materials in nanoscale showed remarkable and superb properties that are completely different from those when the material in the bulk condition. This makes nanotechnology to hold a great promise in effecting profound scientific, medical, energy, economic and even cultural change on society. Almost all countries are placed long and short term strategic plans as to obtain more experience and carefully examine the potential implications of nanotechnology and its strategic benefits. Consequently, research indicators on this technology indicate that some developing countries compete with the world's largest countries in the control of this technology. This paper, however, provides an introduction to the nanotechnology, and also discovers the current status of the research on this particular field globally and in the Arabic region. The real status of the scientific research on the nanotechnology in Libya correspondingly is realised. Steps required by the Libyan authorities and research principles to fill in the gape in this area are also expressed.
