Polarization Tunable Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber

Abstract: Metamaterial-based perfect absorbers have attracted considerable attention due to their great prospect for practical applications. The existing absorbers, however, are mostly polarization insensitive or only sensitive to one direction, which is inapplicable in some areas. Polarization tunable or high absorption in two orthogonal directions is very useful and necessary. Herein, we present a polarization tunable absorber formed by an asymmetric patch and a dielectric layer on top of a metallic board. With this s… Show more

“…The frequency changes of the six resonance modes in 0 and 90 degrees are due to the different metallic layer sizes in two perpendicular directions. The six-band polarization tunable MPA can be potentially used to detect the EM waves of specific polarization and even to control and manipulate the polarization angle of incident waves5859.…”

“…[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] Dual-band metamaterial absorbers were also demonstrated using the stacked structural design methods. [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] Other structural designs were also suggested to achieve the dual-band absorption performance, including cuboid ferrite particle, 35 circular sector resonator, 36 graphene-SiC hybrid system, 37 cylinder MoS 2dielectric array, 38 and asymmetric double-split ring resonators. 39 Although various kinds of structures have been proposed to achieve dual-band absorption, there are still many similar shortcomings in these designs, which limit their practical application to a certain extent.…”

“…In order to meet the growing needs of practical applications of imaging and wireless communication systems working in THz region, various metamaterial‐based tunable filters 2‐4 and modulators 5‐7 have been proposed. In refs [8–10], the resonant frequency and the resonant peak are modulated by modifying the unit cell structure of the proposed metamaterial, which cannot support real time modulation. In refs [11–13], real time modulation is realized by the design of micro‐electro‐mechanical systems (MEMS).…”
