Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS): A review, with emphasis on pathological, virological and diagnostic aspects

Abstract: Despite early attempts to control the spread of the disease, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) has now become endemic in many countries including Britain. The occurrence of subclinical herd infections, the prolonged circulation of virus within herds and probable aerogenic virus spread all mitigated against the success of control measures. The origin of the disease is unknown but the causative agent has been shown to be an arterivirus with shared features to lactate dehydrogenase virus of mic… Show more

“…orcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is characterized by respiratory distress in piglets and reproductive failure in sows (3,6). The disease was detected in North America in 1987 (9,11) and in Europe in 1990 (25), and it has now become a well-recognized global swine disease (1,6,10,23,35).…”

PRRS has devastated the swine industry by causing tremendous economic losses throughout the world and is now considered to be one of the most important diseases in countries with intensive swine industries (16,20).…”

“…Clinical signs of PRRS in growing pigs include fever, anorexia, and respiratory disease characterized by dyspnea and tachypnea. Reproductive failure associated with PRRSV is characterized by mid-to late-term abortions, increased numbers of mummified fetuses, decreased numbers of pigs born alive, increased numbers of weak-born pigs, and generally poor reproductive performance (10,11).…”
