Porphyromonas gingivalis Infection Accelerates Atherosclerosis Mediated by Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Responses in ApoE-/- Mice

Abstract: These results suggest that chronic intravenous infection with P. gingivalis in ApoE-/- mice could accelerate the development of atherosclerosis, possibly associated with mediating oxidative stress as well as inflammatory responses and disturbing the lipid profile.

“…Similarly, hyperhomocysteinemic individuals have elevated LOX‐1 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, while, after treatment with folic acid, LOX‐1 upregulation is normalized . Interestingly, infections caused by Chlamydophylia pneumoniae , Cytomegalovirus, Porphyromonas gingivalis , and Helicobacter pylori contribute to atherosclerosis . For example, when ECs were infected by C. pneumoniae , increased expression of LOX‐1 and LOX‐1‐mediated ox‐LDL endocytosis was observed in HUVECs.…”

“…Unlike lipid‐lowering agents, DNJ also has the function of regulating immunity (Piao et al., 2018). Furthermore, pathogen infection may accelerate atherosclerosis caused by oxidative stress and inflammatory activities in an animal model (Xuan et al., 2017). DNJ exerts antioxidant and antibacterial activities (Tang et al., 2017), and which may be suitable for patients with atherosclerotic events.…”

“…Atherosclerosis mainly occurs in the intimal layer of the blood vessel wall, and is characterized by subendothelial lipid deposits, vascular smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation, and formation of foam cells in the subendothelial space [ 83 ]. Risk factors for cardiovascular diseases include vascular senescence and obesity.…”
