Potential of Nitrogen Gas Miscible Injection in South East Assets, Abu Dhabi

Abstract: This study evaluated the potential for application of miscible nitrogen injection to South East assets in Abu Dhabi which include three giant onshore oil fields. MMP (Minimum miscibility pressure) for different N2- oil systems was determined as a key criterion for screening. CMG simulation and correlations approaches were employed for determining pure N2 MMP. Results of the study demonstrated that pure nitrogen miscible injection is promising for some reservoirs in the SE fields when reservoir p… Show more

“…But the toxicity of H 2 S limits its widespread application. On the other hand, the mixture of CO 2 and N 2 , so-called flue gas, is used to drive the crude oil for EOR and receives extensive attention (Abrishami and Hatamian, 1996;Bahralolom and Orr, 1988;Belhaj et al, 2013b;Fandino et al, 2015;Firoozabadi and Aziz, 1986;Srivastava and Huang, 1997). In a word, the presence of CH 4 , H 2 S and N 2 in the CO 2 stream alters phase behavior of the reservoir oil and injected gas system, which influences extremely displacement mechanism and recovery efficiency.…”

“…Nitrogen (N 2 ) injection has been used worldwide since the mid-1960s as a secondary or tertiary recovery method, which maintains pressure to enhance oil recovery in different lithological reservoirs (Bujanos et al, 2005;Sinanan and Budri, 2012;Wu et al, 2013). There are more benefits for nitrogen injection, for example, non-corrosive factor, availability of onsite nitrogen gas production, and lower production or operation cost by cryogenic air separation (Belhaj et al, 2013). Inert and non-corrosive nitrogen do not absorb on matrix surface of reservoir rock or alter the rock's wettability in low-permeability reservoirs (Yu and Sheng, 2016).…”

“…T he decrease of primary production in conventional and unconventional oil recovery has led to rapid development of a variety of techniques and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes to extract residual oil prior to abandoning the reservoir. [1][2][3][4] In general, EOR techniques are categorized into four main classes: gas injection, chemical flooding, thermal processes, and microbial flooding. Gas injection is widely used for enhanced oil recovery processes, contributing to higher oil recovery by injecting various gases such as carbon dioxide, natural gas, nitrogen, enriched natural gas, or flue gas into the oil reservoir.…”
