Preheating of streamlined liner of pharyngeal airway (SLIPA) reduced the related complications: a randomized control study

Abstract: This study was designed to verify whether preheating could decrease the complications that may be associated with the use of streamlined liner of pharyngeal airway (SLIPA). We evaluated the incidence of sore throat, maximum sealing pressure, hoarseness and blood stains after preheating of SLIPA. Eighty patients scheduled for hysteroscopic surgery to whom the SLIPA was considered suitable were randomly allocated to preheating group or control group. The SLIPA in preheating group was placed in the incubator at 4… Show more

“…In addition, because novice doctors have limited experience in inserting the device, they are very careful in their manipulation. That could be why there was less upper airway trauma than reported in other studies . Regarding the complication of sore throat, the incidence in both groups at discharge from the PACU and 24 h after operation were also lower than prior reports using an unmodified device at discharge from the PACU .…”

“…These factors make it difficult to insert the SLIPA and increase the incidence of complications compared to other SADs, especially when inserted by novice doctors (Fig. A) . If the chamber and the oropharyngeal anatomy in the sniffing position have the same angle degree, It could improve insertion success, shorten insertion time and even avoid complications (Figs B and B).Therefore, in the modified method group, the SLIPA was bent 120° at the ‘bridge’ using a Satin‐Slip ® intubating stylet (Mallinckrodt Inc., St. Louis, MO, USA).…”

“…Incidence of postoperative pharyngeal pain. Postoperative pharyngeal pain was reported in 5 studies, [6,7,17,31,32] including 181 patients in the prewarming group and 181 in the control group. The heterogeneity of the studies was low (I 2 = 0, P = .82; Fig.…”

“…Previous reports have shown that a non-inflatable cuff forms a more efficient seal around the larynx with a higher sealing pressure as the temperature rises to body temperature. [7,8,[12][13][14] Usually, SGA devices are preserved at room temperature before insertion. Compared with preservation at room temperature, a prewarming non-inflatable cuff laryngeal mask would enable the cuff to fit the pharyngeal structure more quickly and better.…”
