Premature graying of hair: Review with updates

Abstract: Premature graying of hair (PGH) is defined as graying of hair before the age of 20 years in Caucasians and before 30 years in African American population. It can severely affect the self-esteem of an individual. The exact etiopathogenesis remains unknown, although it has been associated with premature aging disorders, atopy, and autoimmune diseases. Patients, who present with PGH, should be assessed for syndromes and metabolism diseases. Hair dyes remain the main modality of the treatment for cosmetic concerns… Show more

“…For likelihood ratio of gray hair, we assume that for Yvonne, the probability of completely gray hair in 1937 was 0.03, and for Jeanne it was about 0.4. 27,28 This would give a ratio of 0.075, but because there is photographic evidence that they were probably using hair dye, we raise this to 0.125.…”

“…1 To date, less than 30 cases of EAE have been reported in adults. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Clinically, EAE is characterized by annular or arciform plaques with edematous borders and centrifugal growth mainly located on the trunk and extremities. 2 In some cases, lesions can be mildly pruritic.…”

“…It is still debated whether EAE is an annular variant of Wells syndrome or a distinct entity based on clinical and histopathologic differences. [2][3][4] Histologically, EAE is characterized by a superficial and deep perivascular infiltrate of abundant eosinophils and lymphocytes. 2,4 In contrast to Wells syndrome, granulomatous inflammation and flame figures are usually absent in EAE.…”

“…In Caucasians usually, gray hair appears between 25 -43 years, while in Africans and Asians the average age is 43.9 ± 10.3 years (Ji et al). The pattern manifestation of the hair graying differs between men and women: while in the male gender, the graying process begins from the temporal and occipital area; in women, the mechanism starts at the boundaries of the scalp (Ji et al;Kumar et al, 2018).…”
