Prevalence and resistance profile of extended-spectrum -lactamases-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Abstract: Increasing bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents has become an issue of concern. A major problem of the treatment of infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae using antibiotics is the emergence of Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae. This study aims to determine the prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae strains in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and describe their resistance profile to other antibiotics commonly used in the infections treatment. 486 clinical strains of … Show more

“…This practice could contribute to the selection of multi-resistant strains. The results of this study are comparable to those of Nadmi et al (2010), Ahmed et al (2012), Ndoutamia et al (2014), Sumera et al (2014) and Dissinviel et al (2017). Isolated strains in hospitalized patients were more resistant than those detected in outpatients.…”

“…This predominance of the species Escherichia coli and Klebsilla pneumoniae in wastewater is linked to the fact that these two E-ESBLs are also the most isolated in digestive carriage in humans and animals (Ouédraogo et al, 2017;Sanou et al, 2019). In addition, these enterobacteria are the most isolated in infectious pathology in three hospitals in Burkina faso (Kpoda et al, 2017).…”

“…Ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole constitute the first-line traditional antibiotics used for salmonellosis treatment [ 38 ]. High prevalence rates of resistance to these antibiotics have been described in Burkina Faso and elsewhere from other sources (e.g., humans and animals) [ 23 , 36 , 39 ]. Salmonella resistance to these affordable antimicrobials is a public health threat.…”
