Prevalence of and risk factors for actinic cheilitis in Brazilian fishermen and women

Abstract: Brazilian fishermen and women constitute a population at risk for lip cancer. Public health programs that encourage the use of sunscreens and a lower daily exposure to solar radiation should be established.

“…Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a potentially malignant disorder of the lip caused by chronic and excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. 1 The prevalence of AC can range from 11.4% to 39.6% in populations chronically exposed to UV radiation, such as fishermen and rural and construction workers, 1,2 and transformation to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is observed in 16.9% to 20.0% of cases. 3,4 Although the understanding of this process has grown in recent years, the molecular events involved in lip carcinogenesis are not fully elucidated.…”

“…4 Furthermore, oral cancer has been associated to chronic solar radiation exposure and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. 5,6 Clinically, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) might be recognized by painless ulcers with more than 2 weeks duration period. Nevertheless, exophytic, leukoplastic and erythroplastic lesions might also clinically suggest oral mucosa carcinogenesis.…”
