Prevention of Aberrant Crypt Foci Formation by Dietary Maize and Yeast Cerebrosides in 1,2-Dimethyihydrazine-treated Mice

Abstract: Sphingolipids are each comprised of a sphingoid base backbone, amide-linked fatty acids (normal and 2hydroxy fatty acids) and a polar headgroup, such as phosphocholine or hexose. Sphingolipids are frequently to be found in eukaryotic organisms, with mammalian sphingolipid trans-4-sphingenine (sphingosine) being most prevalent. Others such as sphinganine (dihydrosphingosine) and 4-hydroxysphinganine (phytosphingosine) frequently occur in small amounts. Plant and fungus sphingolipids display a diversity of sphin… Show more

“…DMH administration caused injury to the crypts, but treatment with dietary GlcCer maintained the colon in the normal state. The results obtained were essentially the same as those of our previous studies 4 . A cytokine array was used to determine the effects of dietary GlcCer on inflammation-related cytokine production in DMH-treated mice for 7 weeks.…”

“…ACF on large intestinal crypts were identified and quantified as described previously 4 . The large intestine was excised from the mice under pentobarbitone anesthesia, and the portion from the cecum to the vent was separated and rinsed in cold saline.…”

“…In our previous study, we investigated the effects of dietary GlcCer on aberrant crypt foci formation in the large intestines of mice treated with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine DMH 15 . In this study, dietary GlcCer suppressed damage of the large intestines by DMH treatment.…”
