Programmable logic circuits based on ambipolar CNFET

Abstract: Recently, it was demonstrated that the polarity of carbon nanotube field effect transistors can be electrically controlled. In this paper we show how Programmable Logic Arrays (PLA) can be built out of these devices, and we illustrate how they outperform usual PLA by internal signal inversion. The simulations show an area saving up to ∼ 21% and decrease of the delay in PLA-based FPGA by 50%. We also show that this architecture is suitable for highperformance design tools and defect-tolerance approaches.

“…Up to now, many circuits have been successfully designed based on CNTFET technology, such as binary and ternary full adder cells, SRAM storage cells, multiple-valued logic circuits, and min-max circuits [27], [17]- [19], [21]- [24], [28]. The CNTFET can also be applied in polylactic acid structures [29]. Due to the structure of the conventional CMOS design, which consists of complementary pull-up and pull-down networks with pure and inverted inputs, the XOR gate is considered to have high power consumption [11].…”

“…Moreover, the important role of this gate has even appeared in optical telecommunication networks for bit pattern recognition, operations related to address comparison, and so on [15] [28]. “…A back gate can be used in order to control the device polarity. It has been shown recently that the unique property of in-field polarity control can yield denser and faster design of reconfigurable logic circuits [2], [3].…”

“…It has been suggested in previous work that embedding the XOR operation into other gates results in generalized logic gates [2], i.e., reconfigurable gates whose input polarities can be set in the field. This results in a higher expressive power, i.e., the potential to implement more complex functions using fewer physical resources.…”
