Recent Advances in Momordica charantia: Functional Components and Biological Activities

Abstract: Momordica charantia L. (M. charantia), a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, and its fruit has been used as a vegetable for thousands of years. Phytochemicals including proteins, polysaccharides, flavonoids, triterpenes, saponins, ascorbic acid and steroids have been found in this plant. Various biological activities of M. charantia have been reported, such as antihy… Show more

“…to list a few. 31 In the present study, the mechanism of CuO NRs synthesis can be hypothesized and explained by using the phenolic content of fruit extract of M. charantia as they are known to have the high reducing ability. 32,33 It is well documented that the gallic acid is present as one of the key phenolic components in M. charantia fruit extract which might facilitate the reduction of Cu(OH) 2 to nano-sized CuO.…”

“…The placebo ingredients included Momordica charantia L. in order to mimic the bitter taste of the TM. This plant is not inactive, having shown anti‐inflammatory effects, so this may have affected the result for the placebo group. In the study with the highest FEV 1 % scores at baseline, there were no significant changes within either group or between groups at EoT.…”
